Matcha Usucha: Everything You Need to Know About This Light and Refined Preparation
Share
Usucha matcha, or "light matcha," is one of the most popular preparations of matcha tea, known for its light texture, delicate foam, and balanced taste. Preparing Usucha is a true art that follows precise steps, inspired by Japanese traditions. Here's how to make this preparation step by step.
What is Usucha ?
Usucha, literally "light tea," is a less concentrated matcha preparation than Koicha (thick matcha). It is prepared with less matcha powder and more water, resulting in an airy texture and a more subtle taste. It is a great introduction for those new to matcha, while offering a refined experience for connoisseurs.
The Steps of Preparing Usucha Matcha:
Here's how to prepare your Usucha while respecting traditional Japanese gestures :
- Pour hot water into your bowl, called Chawan in Japanese, to heat it slightly.
- Then dip your bamboo whisk, or Chasen , in hot water for a few seconds. This helps relax the strands and prevent breakage.
- Empty the water from the bowl and gently wipe it with a clean cloth.
- Sift 2 grams of matcha through a fine sieve to avoid lumps and ensure a smooth texture.
- Pour 60 ml of hot water at 80°C (no more to preserve the subtle aromas of the matcha) over the sifted powder.
- Use the Chasen to whisk vigorously in a W motion for 20-30s . The goal is to create a light and homogeneous foam on the surface. Do not press too hard to avoid breaking the whisk strands.
- Finish by gently whisking the surface to eliminate large bubbles and refine the foam.
- Take the time to appreciate the delicate aromas and airy texture of your Usucha matcha. This preparation is ideal to accompany a moment of relaxation or for an energizing break.
